The Hawaii United Okinawa Affiliation (HUOA) was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit group in 1951, initially below the title United Okinawan Affiliation of Hawai‘i. The group consisted of 50 golf equipment, every organized by the cities in Okinawa from which its members originated, to offer a help system for the Okinawan group.
Based on Tamashiro, the catalyst for forming a unified group was that the U.S. army administration on the time didn’t need to talk with every membership individually. In 1995, the group was renamed the Hawaii United Okinawa Affiliation. At the moment, HUOA continues its mission to advertise and protect Okinawan tradition in Hawai‘i.
This 12 months’s Okinawan Pageant marks two main milestones: the 125th anniversary of Okinawan immigration to Hawai‘i and the 40th anniversary of the sister-state relationship between Hawai‘i and Okinawa. To commemorate the event, Okinawa’s governor and 40 of the island’s 41 mayors will journey to Oʻahu to attend the pageant.
Tamashiro is making a poster sequence to spotlight the achievements of Okinawans in Hawai‘i over the previous 125 years. Among the many tales she is going to share is that of Shigeru Serikaku, an uchinanchu from Waipahu, who constructed and flew an airplane in Hawai‘i simply 14 years after the Wright brothers’ first flight in North Carolina.
Proceeds from the Okinawan Pageant help a number of HUOA cultural applications, together with the Hawai‘i–Okinawa Excessive College Scholar Alternate Program and the Youngsters’s Cultural Day Camp, often called Warabi Ashibi.

Following the pageant, visitors can proceed to interact with Okinawan tradition through the Okinawan FEASTival happening Sept. 1–15. Taking part eating places on Oʻahu will function Okinawan dishes and elements on their menus. Okinawan-owned Aloha Tofu will provide jimami tofu (Okinawan peanut tofu), a preferred merchandise that usually sells out rapidly at their sales space through the Okinawan Pageant.
